According to Timo Lassy, it is unnecessary to mystify jazz. The most important thing is a good flair and mood. It is great, of course, if one also possesses the melodic themes and deep harmonies that Timo Lassy has always been blessed with. Jazz was originally dance music, and it is also about how the musicians can create an astonishing amount of energy on stage that the audience can absorb and project towards each other.
With Lassy's new Moves album, Latin rhythms combine admirably with the cool and even erotic soul jazz of the 50s and 60s. The album sums up Lassy's career, and it creates a musical image of a time when men had collars and straight ties and women laughed. In addition to the Timo Lassy Band, also on stage are Ricky-Tick Big Band Brass, who contribute to the breadth and depth of Lassy´s sound and give the music cinematic qualities.

OLAVI LOUHIVUORI “THE NET OF INDRA“ (FI/SE/NO)
Olavi Louhivuori - drums
Eivind Lønning - trumpet
Juhani Aaltonen - sax, flute
Palle Danielsson - bass
Master drummer Olavi Louhivuori’s ”The Net Of Indra” is a unique collaboration between two Nordic jazz festivals. The band made their debut in March at the Vossa Jazz Festival in Norway, and now in Tampere they are seen in action for the second time.
The band is an authentic fusion of the best of Scandinavian jazz. In addition to Louhivuori, the band features Norwegian trumpeter Eivind Lønning, who’s known for playing with such names as Joshua Redman, Dave Holland and Chick Corea. Besides, he plays with avant-rock band Motorpsycho.
World-famous Swedish bass player Palle Danielsson, known for his collaboration with Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek and Bill Evans, became acquainted with Louhivuori when both played in Claudio Filippini’s trio Trio. Juhani “Junnu” Aaltonen needs no introduction. “His spiritual playing is flowing from somewhere out of this world” says Louhivuori.
When Louhivuori - known for his lyrical and experimental drum art - gets onstage with his musical soulmates, we can expect something good and beautiful.
KAJA DRAKSLER OCTET (SI/LV/AR/NL/RO/BE/IS)
Kaja Draksler - piano
Björk Níelsdóttir - voice
Laura Polence - voice
Ada Rave - tenor sax, clarinet
Ab Baars - clarinet, tenor sax
George Dumitriu - violin, viola
Lennart Heyndels - double bass
Onno Govaert - drums, orchestral percussion
As a young woman, Kaja Draksler wondered whether she would study Latin and Ancient Greek or music. Music won, and at age 18 the Slovenian girl moved to Amsterdam to study classical composition. After a few years, she became engrossed by the vibrant improvisational scene of the city, and the elements of her own music became clearer.
Old and ultra-modern influences are wowen together. The band's enigmatic music spirals out from a kaledoscopic spectrum of styles and moods. The approach of the octet draws inspiration from different styles, places and time periods, although their goal isn't to be historically authentic: more like a kind of Cubist fusion. Although the material is carefully composed, there is free improvisation. Small-scale ballads are given a modern classical texture. The songs are composed to the poems of Pablo Neruda, Andriana Minou and Gregor Strnisa: they cover the essence of humanity through absurd yet fully believable ways. The singers bring together Opera, Broadway and musical theatre styles. Fluxus. Nexus. Action. BANG!

Cuban rumba was born among African slaves and the white lower classes during the Spanish Colonial era. Rumba developed a whole culture, celebration and way of life where music, dance and social activities established their place.
The long-term plan of French trumpeter Fidel Fourneyron was someday to implement a project around Cuban music, especially since he had been to Havana several times, where he fell in love with Rumba, its rhythms and the opportunity Rumba offered for improvisation.
¿Que Vola? is Cuban slang for “How is it going?” With this simple, melodious question, Fourneyron presents a French-Cuban band whose members represent the cream of French jazz. Today they are supported by a explosive cuban trio, whom have played with the well-known Osain del Monte, the band that has been creatively revitalising Cuban Rumba traditions. In this thrilling show, Rumba meets French jazz, but one can also hear echoes in the music from the traditional Yoruba songs of the southwest Nigerian and Benin region.

HAMID DRAKE & YUKO OSHIMA (US/JP)
Hamid Drake - drums, frame drum, voice
Yuko Oshima - drums, voice
Two drummers and two cultures are encountered when Japanese Yuko Oshima and American Hamid Drake sit behind their drum-sets, and the question is about the attractiveness of contrasts and otherness.
Oshima's rigorously developing rudiments, as well as wild crescendos and diminuendos, seem to tell a story with every stroke. Sometimes rhythmic patterns are like mathematics, or even the most geometrically perfect snowflakes that float down from some high peaks of Mount Fuji at sunrise. Musical karate strikes are waiting, and don't appear until the eleventh hour, when the attention begins to wander. Drum guru Hamid Drake represents a similar philosophical approach to drums and drumming, and he has become known for his numerous World Music bands and his amazing adaptability.
In the duo's presentation, you can hear two continents facing off against each other. The marvelous sounds of traditional percussions are enchanting. Through them, Oshima and Drake are negotiating, mimicking each other, perhaps even debating and joking.
DENYS BAPTISTE “THE LATE TRANE” (GB)
Denys Baptiste - sax
Nikki Yeoh - piano, keys
Rod Youngs - drums
Larry Bartley - bass
Denys Baptiste's 2017 album, The Late Trane, was one of the year’s most talked-about jazz records, and also received several nominations for Jazz Album of The Year. With Late Trane, the British saxophonist makes his versions of John Coltrane's later output, which was characterized by an ever-expanding abstraction and longing for total freedom of expression. For Coltrane, the question was about spiritual exploration, overcoming and abandoning dogmas, becoming extreme and infinite.
The Late Trane puts Coltrane's late production into a new, neon-colored shimmering light. Baptiste and his band interpret the songs knowing their history, but with the style of the 21st century. Baptiste contemplates the essence of Coltrane's themes and the spiritual content of the songs as, with the most treasured minimalist movements, the band moves through the reggae rhythms to futuristic funk and monumental ambient, with Baptiste’s saxophone at its centre. The concept culminates in Baptist's own compositions, which could have been from Coltrane’s own pen if fate had chosen otherwise.
RYMDEN (SE/NO)
Bugge Wesseltoft - piano, Fender rhodes, synth
Dan Berglund - bass
Magnus Öström - drums
Rymden is the brand-new superband of Scandinavian Jazz. Drummer Magnus Öström and double bass player Dan Berglund used to play with the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, which disbanded, at the height of the band's popularity, with Svensson's tragic drowning accident in 2008. The Norwegian keyboard player Bugge Wesseltoft had been playing with his band at the same time and with a similar vision: the bands of Svensson and Wessetoft were both at the forefront of creating a new, fresh, 21st century Scandinavian Jazz that would serve as a model and inspiration for musicians around the world.
Now we have Rymden, whose music is based on three elements: melancholic and atmospheric songwriting, drama-laden rhythms and virtuoso jazz soloing. Wesseltoft's piano takes the greatest soloist role in the trio's music, but the arrangements take on sophisticated counterpoint thinking. In the music of the band, the influences of modern jazz, Johann Sebastian Bach, and rock music can all be heard, creating a cinematic atmosphere. Mature but relaxed with Nordic style.

3TM (FI)
Teppo Mäkynen - drums, sampler
Antti Lötjönen - double bass
Jussi Kannaste - sax
Drumming with loops. Dunking like a beast. Maybe he also dances with wolves?
Teppo Mäkynen has worked with a variety of musicians and numerous bands during his career, and has always helped take their creativity to the next level. The fresh and very personal project with his 3TM trio combines electronic sounds with jazz improvisation in a unique and vibrant way. It is difficult to distinguish where the boundary lies when the pulsating loops are aligned with the nuanced accents of the instruments, or when the band-developed groove is transformed in an instant with abstract technobeats and instant live samples. Or when Mäkynen improvises and wrestles with the huge sine wave and white noise.
His triumph is reflected in the contemplative spirit of modern minimalism. Mäkynen presents himself as a bold seeker and questioner, who also finds amazing and particularly beautiful things within his musical journeys. Mäkynen's songs carry memories and influences from the dimension of fairytales, spaces which are sometimes frightening, but always rewarding.
HALME PROSPEKT (FI)
Hepa Halme - woodwinds
Matti Riikonen - trumpet
Esa Onttonen - guitar
Arttu Tolonen - modular synth, guitar
Tapani Varis - bass, mouth organ, willow flute
Alf Forsman - drums
Pekko Käppi - jouhikko
Halme Prospekt raises strong synthetic imagery. It is musical narrative at its very best - lights and shadows, impressions, moods and paradoxes draped in the language of the voices.
The Bluespektor album is a kind of sequel to the 2015 Pajazzo album, where the narrative has now grown to epic proportions. In their gratifying version of The Grateful Dead classic Blues For Allah, Halme Prospekt implements the secret fantasy of several music fans and are bringing collective improvisation up to date.
The musical elements of Halme Prospekt are simple and clear, but with the fluency of water. The expression varies all the time, in a seemingly free form way, but still retaining its own direction. The solos are intertwined with the compositional elements, and vice versa.
Spiritually, Halme Prospekt can be seen to continue the heritage of Edward Vesala's Shamanic style. Tonight's lineup will feature an enticing mix of both ancient and modern influences. Very Finnish and totally universal!
MOPO FEAT MIKKO INNANEN (FI)
Linda Fredriksson - saxophones
Eero Tikkanen - double bass
Eeti Nieminen - drums
Mikko Innanen - saxophones
The roots of this energetic trio are in a mythical bar fight, where Linda Fredriksson, Eero Tikkanen and Eeti Nieminen beat their wise heads together. From this cracking came the Mopo trio, whose sincere buzz has also drawn fans from outside the traditional jazz audience. There are many reasons for this, but most importantly are the skill and the attitude of the musicians. The trio started in 2009 and draws its influence from jazz, punk and Finnish nature. Mopo removes jazz from the constrains of artificial elitism and injects it with the sheer energy and joy of being alive.
The mud flies when the whole trio drives in a circle at ever-increasing speeds. At times, they drive without hands, just for fun. The spontaneous, playful and sensual music of Mopo makes them one of the most inspiring bands in Finland. Mikko Innanen, a leading Finnish saxophone player, joins in today to create a rare tandem version of the moped, where all Mikko, Linda, Eeti and Eero do the steering! Help!
