Copenhagen Jazz Festival presents
The opening night of the 2013 Tampere Jazz Happening offers a unique compilation of performances by three wildly ingenious Danish ensembles displaying extraordinary musicality. The concert has been produced in collaboration with the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Free entry
20.00 Toto (DEN)
This explosive duo consists of two radical drummers who exhibit a dark, hypnotic sense of rhythmic energy. With the intensity of a traditional ritual, Toto’s soundscape seems to zoom past listeners like a high-speed train. You want to move – or even dance – but find your feet grounded on the floor as your body takes in the waves of sound.
21.30 Maria Laurette Friis (DEN)
Maria Laurette Friis is one of the most talented and original songwriters in the contemporary music scene of Denmark. She has published three critically acclaimed albums together with her ensemble Tys Tys, but recently has been focusing on solo compositions. Both intimate and impressive, her music guides the listeners toward a beautifully mysterious and reflective twilight.
23.00 Girls in Airports (DEN)
Girls in Airports finds inspiration from all around the world. This award-winning ensemble has collaborated with musicians in China and Brazil, fusing new influences into their original mix of indie, jazz, and world music, with a touch of cool Nordic hues. The group’s signature elements, including purring saxophones, delicately crafted melodies, and infectious grooves, are also present on their latest album, Kaikoura (Mawimusic, 2013).
