Kaupunkijazz: Elina Arlin Band & Verneri Pohjola Quartet,Kaupungintalon aukio, ylöjärvi7.8. At 19:00
Elina Arlin Band (www)

The Ylöjärvi Town Hall Square turns into a music venue on 7 August when the Kaupunkijazzit one-day festival invades the town. This year's artists are Elina Arlin Band and Verneri Pohjola Quartet. The event closes with an atmospheric jazz mass at Ylöjärvi Church.
Elina Arlin fronts her own five-piece, Elina Arlin Band, at Kaupunkijazzit. Arlin first came to larger-scale attention when she participated in the Uuden Musiikin kilpailu (Eurovision Song Contest Finnish semi-finals) in 2013. Her first album, New Name, came out in 2014. Arlin has composed and written lyrics for all the tracks. A postgraduate student at the Sibelius Academy, she is currently working as a voice teacher at the Turku Conservatory. Her other projects include the3ees vocal group and the orchestra Local Voices.
Trumpeter Verneri Pohjola first became known as a member of the acclaimed Ilmiliekki Quartet in the early 2000s and has ever since been a strong presence in the Finnish jazz life. His two earlier solo albums, the Emma-awarded debut Aurora and the sophomore Ancient History, have been praised by critics and audiences alike.
Pohjola brings his newish quartet to Kaupunkijazzit. The outfit is composed of some of Finland's brightest jazz stars: Aki Rissanen (piano), Antti Lötjönen (bass) and - as the newest member in the band's ranks - Teppo Mäkynen (drums). The third album Bullhorn, released on the British label Edition Records, presented the regenerated quartet in its full force.
Kaupunkijazzit has been organised since 2007 by the Ylöjärvi Town. The jazz mass is organised by Ylöjärvi parish.
