Gyárfás Family Trio

The Gyárfás Family Trio offers a memorable jazz concert on Tuesday 28 February at 18:00 at the Liszt Institute (Kaisaniemenkatu 10, Helsinki).
The trio consists of father István "Gyafi" Gyárfás (guitar), Hungary's most popular swing guitarist, his son Attila (drums), a teacher at the Jazz Music Department of the Liszt Academy, and Péter (piano), a master's student at the Sibelius Academy.
The trio's music is characterised by delicate chamber music, where a fine balladic sound alternates between a flowing swing and a lively world of Latin rhythms. The orchestra's repertoire includes arrangements of popular jazz standards in a unique and creative performance style, as well as some of the family trio's own fresh original compositions.
The concert is free, with proceeds from the sale of hand programs (€10) providing the artists' fees. Please register for the concert by Monday 27 February.

Taborn/Reid/Smith (US)
The three piece ensemble of Craig Taborn, Tomeka Reid and Ches Smith was convened to perform a new book of Taborn’s compositions that crossed the boundaries of contemporary chamber music, improv/jazz, and groove and roots music from Africa and the Caribbean. The music required an instrumentation that could maneuver through these rapid shifts seamlessly. Utilizing Tomeka Reid’s fluency as a cellist and improviser, Ches Smith’s versatility moving from traditional drum set to more extended percussion set-ups, and Taborn’s approaches to piano and electric/electronic keyboards the music moves deftly from intricately crafted chamber miniatures through energetic explorations while finding its roots in true groove and melody. The group’s inspirations include Sun Ra, Mammane Sani, Don Cherry, Conlon Nancarrow, Art Ensemble of Chicago and Drexciya.
Craig Taborn: piano, electronics
Tomeka Reid: cello
Ches Smith: percussion, drums
