Soft Machine, one of the most significant avant-garde/jazz-rock bands from the UK, will perform at Louhisali in May! Founded in 1966, the chameleon of jazz-rock and true mover of music released their latest Other Doors album in 2023. On their upcoming Other Doors Scandinavian Tour, the band will perform classic material from the Hopper-Jenkins-Ratledge era, as well as many tracks from their latest album.

Formed by Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers, and Larry Nowlin, the band was one of the leading acts of the Canterbury scene and often performed alongside groups like The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd. Over the years, the band's style has evolved from early psychedelic rock toward prog and jazz-rock, while retaining their distinctive sense of adventure and open-mindedness.

The current lineup of Soft Machine features guitarist John Etheridge, who played on albums Softs and Alive and Well in the 70's. Theo Travis plays wind instruments and keyboards, having collaborated with artists such as David Gilmour, Steven Wilson, and Robert Fripp. Fred Thelonious Baker plays bass, and on drums, the band is joined by Asaf Sirkis, who has been praised by Robert Wyatt.

Drummer Chris Corsano has been working at the intersection of free jazz, avant-rock and experimental music since the late 1990s. Corsano is widely considered one of the most versatile and innovative drummers in contemporary improvised music. Corsano's playing partners can be found in the worlds of rock and jazz (Joe McPhee, Rodrigo Amado), but also in experimental music. Corsano played on Björk's Volta album and on the album's world tour. The Guardian describes him as "one of the world's great drummers".

St. Louis-born bassist Darin Gray, who has now settled in Finland, is known as a solo artist, tireless collaborator, improviser and, among others, Jim O'Rourke's regular bassist for over 25 years. Gray and Chris Corsano have performed together under the name Chikamorachi.

Saxophonist Sami Pekkola is one of the most active figures in Finnish experimental music and free jazz. The energetic phonologist, who works in several different ensembles and projects, has performed with, among others, electronic music pioneer Pekka Airaksinen and free jazz legend Peter Brötzmann.
