Luoto-yhtye

(+ Aino Juutilainen, Merimaija Aalto)
keikka

The ensemble Luoto emerged from a silent film accompaniment project in early autumn 2024. The ensemble members Aino Juutilainen (cello), Merimaija Aalto (violin, viola, vocals), and Hermanni Yli-Tepsa (violin, double bass) are three versatile string musicians who place great emphasis on creating and performing music on their instruments, whether through composition or improvisation. Juutilainen, Aalto, and Yli-Tepsa have worked as both performers and creators in fields such as indie music, jazz, improvised and experimental music, as well as performing arts. They build interplay and tonal colours on their string instruments through attentive listening, creating calm and clear atmospheres and memories, but also bright, melancholic, touching, and stormy soundscapes.

In this children’s concert, the kids step into the world of music through imagination. The melodies take the listener on a wordless adventure. At times, the whole audience is swept into the music-making. The concert is suitable for all ages.

Free entry

The concert is supported by City of Helsinki, Svenska Kulturfonden and The Finnish Music Foundation.

Violinist Dominique Pifarély and pianist Francois Couturier, defining figures in creative music in France, renew their special connection on Preludes and Songs, their second album on ECM. From 4 to 22 October 2025 the two masters perform this repertoire on an extensive tour in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland, including a concert at the Vilnius Jazz Festival on 16 October. They reach Finland on 19 October and perform in Turku on 21 October.

Pianist François Couturier and violinist Dominique Pifarély, major figures in French improvisation, have played together in many projects over the last 30 years, including their duo, which made its recording debut for ECM with the remarkable Poros in 1997. Preludes and Songs, carries the story forward, with its programme including music by both players as well as pieces by Jacques Brel, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and J.J. Johnson. With sensibilities informed by jazz and contemporary composition, Couturier and Pifarély channel the wide-ranging repertoire into compelling, starkly expressive music. Preludes and Songs was recorded in the exceptional acoustics of Reitstadel Neumarkt, in October 2023, and produced by Manfred Eicher.
