Ernest Ranglin

The long and colourful career of Jamaican Ernest Ranglin is like no other: Ranglin got started with the early ska, calypso, reggae and dub bands of the 1950s and 60s and was involved in creating the soundscapes of those new and developing styles. Mixing virtuoso jazz guitar playing with a reggae beat, Ranglin has worked with practically all Jamaican music greats from Bob Marley and the Wailers to Jimmy Cliff and Lee “Scratch” Perry.
The farewell tour of 83-year-old Ranglin comes to Huvila Festival Tent with a true world music super band. Senegalese singer Cheikh Lô is one of the biggest names in West African music, and his unique voice has been charming audiences since the 1990s. Playing the drums is afrobeat icon Tony Allen, known for his work with Fela Kuti. Representing traditional jazz in the line-up are bass player Ira Coleman, who has worked with, for example, Herbie Hancock and Sting, and pianist Alex Wilson, a hot name in Latin jazz. Playing the saxophone is the group’s youngest star, the British Soweto Kinch.
The opening act, Kalle Kalima’s Long Winding Road, takes the audience on a voyage of discovery from free jazz to the world of Western melodies.
Kalle Kalima’s Long Winding Road starts at 7 pm. Ernest Ranglin & Friends starts at 8.30 pm.

Jazz & Dance: Minna Tervamäki ja Sini Länsivuori & Marzi Nyman 4Koko Jazz Club, helsinki3.9. At 20:00

The first Saturday in the autumn programme of Koko Jazz Club is dedicated to jazz and dance, when dancers Minna Tervamäki and Sini Länsivuori join Marzi Nyman's new quartet for a night of free improvisation.
Minna Tervamäki is an award-winning dancer, a former étoile of the Finnish National Ballet. During her long career, Tervamäki has danced all the major principal roles of the classical ballet canon and starred in a number of works by acclaimed contemporary choreographers. Having retired from the National Ballet in 2012, she has focussed on inter-artistic productions. She has won numerous awards, including the Philip Morris Dance Flower Award (1997), the Edvard Fazer Award (2000), and the Libris Award (2006).
Sini Länsivuori has made a notable career in the ranks of the Finnish National Ballet, concentrating especially on modern dance. She has collaborated with the likes of Ohad Naharin, Jorma Uotinen, Jiri Kylian and Kenneth Kvarnstorm, and belonged to the Tero Saarinen Company since 1998. In 2007, she was given the Finland Award for her achievements in the field of dance.
The chameleonic guitarist Marzi Nyman and his new quartet will be providing music for the dancers -- without any premeditated plans! Star trumpeter Jukka Eskola will be acting as a soloist alongside Nyman. The club series is hosted by jazz dancer Wilma-Emilia Kuosa.
