Nina Mya To A Record-Release Tour In Finland

Nina Mya celebrates the release of her third album ‘Closure’ on a tour across the country. Having been described as a bridge-builder between old and new vocal jazz, she and her quintet, indeed, brim with old-time glamour and charismatic presence.

Nina Mya’s compositions echo Afro-American gospel and the hard bop and soul jazz of the 1950s and 60s, and as to her style references to such great ladies of jazz as Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson are detectable. But the lyrics come from her pen and the stories from her own life. There is no doubt that with her intense presence, expressive voice, skilful improvisation and sovereign band-leading this vocalist-composer has more than what it takes to be a great lady of jazz in our time.

Nina’s crew is composed of some of Finland’s foremost jazz musicians and when on stage their irrepressible energy and effortless communication reflect the essence of the Afro-American heritage of jazz. In arranging the material for the band Nina has saxophonist Petri Puolitaival as her right hand, and the pair is also in charge of the production. So far Nina Mya has issued two albums: the debut Flying Solo came out in 2012; the sophomore Our Time two years later. In July 2016 the band released their third album Closure where Nina’s compositions and lyrics flow “darker in tone than ever before”.

Jukkis Uotila was described as “internationally most respected Finnish jazz artist ever”, by Cultural minister Paavo Arhinmäki, when he awarded Jukkis with Finland’s prestigious State Prize for Music in 2011. In Porvoo Jazz festival he will be seen on the opening concert of the festival. He will be playing with his quartet that will be featured by legendary jazz drummer Billy Hart who has been one of Uotilas mentors for many years. Since they met 1977 in Finland their paths have crossed many times over the years, in NYC and at many festivals.

"I had never played piano with him until 2012 when we did a concert in Helsinki and the event was such a success, that I was really anxious to get another chance to record our collaboration. Thus we now celebrate Herbie's 75th birthday with the release of "The Herbie Hancock
Legacy"."

Billy and Uotila will be joined by two excellent swedish musicians, Karl-Mrtin Almqvist on sax and Johnny Åman on
bass.

Jazz dinner à la Paleface & Chef Tsutsunen at the Porvoo Jazz Festival!

Start your Porvoo Jazz Festival evening early and in a delicious way by having dinner with rap artist Paleface and Chef Jyrki Tsutsunen. Rapper Paleface spins records to Chef Tsutsunen's tasty menu. The dinner will be served in co-operation with Cafe Rongo. 

Tickets 70 € include the dinner, and admission to the two evening concerts. After the concerts DJ Bunuel will be playing records and Sörkkä Steamin' Jazz Club will be hosting a  jam session.
