The Sointi Jazz Orchestra is a Finnish big band comprised of talented young musicians. Look forward to hearing an assortment of the group’s creative original material and a revisit of last Fall’s release, “Saarnaaja”. Finnish jazz legend Juhani Aaltonen joins the 18 member orchestra as the soloist for ”Saarnaaja” on saxophone and flute.

The cinematic compositions of Sointi Jazz Orchestra blend many traditions of popular music with classical influences. Since its birth in 2013, the group has only ever performed original works or works arranged specifically for it. During its existence they’ve worked with, among others, singer Aili Ikonen (Jörö-Jukka 2015), saxophone player Jukka Perko (Hoosianna 2015) and The Student Theater (Juhlat 2015) and released three studio albums: “Syntymä” (2016), “Tiernapojat” (2017) and “Saarnaaja” (2018).

SavoyJAZZ, UMO & Jussi Lampela: Jazz Noir feat. Jukka Perko & Jukka Eskola,Savoy-teatteri, helsinki8.3. At 19:00

Jussi Lampela’s new piece Jazz Noir, premiered in early 2018, sweeps the listener to the dark alleys and mysterious scenes of the 1940s and 50s crime jazz and film noir. Inspired by fatal liaisons and hard-boiled classics, the composition is an audio-visual experience for big band, two soloists, sound tape and video projection.

In cinema, jazz has often used to portray human vice and crime. Indeed, Lampela’s project has countless models in the hall of fame of Hollywood’s score composers from Elmer Bernstein to Henry Mancini. In the concert, UMO will be fronted by A-listing Finnish stars saxophonist Jukka Perko and trumpeter Jukka Eskola. To complete this thriller, a video installation by video artist Joonas Tikkanen and audio tape excerpting some of the most important political speeches of the era will be playing throughout the concert in the background.

OK:KO is a fresh quartet from Helsinki led by drummer Okko Saastamoinen. The band's spiritual and searching sound is characterised by their highly personal musical language and genuine teamwork, honed by continuous touring in between the band's 2017 debut and their second album Syrtti, to be released on Helsinki's We Jazz Records on 22 February.

The ensemble includes some of the most sought-after talents of the young generation of Finnish jazz. Soulful sax player Jarno Tikka continues his rise to the top after his strong effort on the previous We Jazz LP, Alder Ego II. Bassist Mikael Saastamoinen (no relation to Okko) is the current "Rising Star" of Helsinki's We Jazz Festival with his solo project Perussastamala, and while pianist Toomas Keski-Säntti may be the least known name here, he makes a strong mark with his thoughtful touch on the piano on several tracks on Syrtti.

The OK:KO band sound has its origins on the spiritual pool of jazz, historically speaking, but the band brings forth a strong personal musical statement thanks to Okko Saastamoinen's memorable compositions and each musician's ability to bring their own vocabulary into the common musical language. Already a live favourite on the local scene, on Syrtti OK:KO shows that it's not a band of mere promise any longer – they deliver in the here and now.
