UMO & Värttinä,Vuotalo, helsinki14.3. At 19:00

keikka

The robust sound of folk music meets the urban swing of jazz as Värttinä and UMO Jazz Orchestra continue their co-operation.

The percussionist of Värttinä, the conductor of UMO Mikko Hassinen has done arrangements of the most popular songs of the world-renown folk group. In addition to “Seelinnikoi” and “Äijö”, the orchestra plays arrangements of some more recent songs of the folk group.

Värttinä is the most successful group of modern Finnish folk music. The music of the band has strong links to Karelia and especially to the singing tradition of women and poetry. The group consists of three female singers and three masterful players of acoustic instruments. The band composes and writes the lyrics of the most of its songs. The arrangements share the easily recognizable characteristics of all music of Värttinä.

The concert presents a rare extravaganza of music, as the indisputable forerunners of their field of music – UMO and Värttinä – join forces.

Värttinä:
Mari Kaasinen – singer
Susan Aho – singer
Karoliina Kantelinen – singer
Matti Laitinen – guitar, mandocello
Lassi Logren – violin
Mikko Hassinen – percussions, conductor
UMO Jazz Orchestra

Signe,Koko Jazz Club, helsinki14.3. At 19:00

Signe means a female triumphant in old Scandinavian. In other languages same or similar word means a ‘sign’, a reference to the improvisation incorporated in the band’s music, taking traditional jazz expression in new directions through the unusual lineup of four female voices of
Josefiina Vannesluoma, Riikka Keränen, Selma Savolainen and Kaisa Mäensivu, who also masters the vivid double bass in Signe.
The band released their debut EP in 2017 and the first full-length album is due in February 2019.

Signe's upcoming album draws influences from the poetry fragments that have survived from the pen of Sappho, the archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. Sappho's lyrical poems were originally accompanied by a lyre. Signe's interpretation of this is New York -based Kaisa Mäensivu's warm, yet sometimes even intimidating double bass. The composers include Josefiina Vannesluoma and Selma Savolainen.

Impérial Orphéon

keikka

On March 1st Impérial Orphéon will spread its irresistible music trance in Äänekoski. The French quartet celebrates its new album Seducere just before the gig. The Impérial Orphéon sounds like on one else band on the jazz scene of today. After a few songs their concert turns into an invitation to dance which you cannot resist. The four virtuosos play with a high level of complicity. They stretch their musical scope from Brazilian grooves to Balkanic trance, from Heroic pop to valse musette and bluesy songs; and the Fantome of the Opera is always ready to pop up into this joyful and bubbling fellowship.

After a successful visit in 2015 the Impérial Orphéon comes back to the Baltics. Their tour is part of the program of the Francophonie 2019.
