Sons of Kemet: 14:00

Sons of Kemet does everything with fierce originality and has been received with huge enthusiasm everywhere they go. The ensemble’s devilishly seductive combination of jazz, rock, Caribbean, and African music is instantly disarming and moving. The quartet’s instrumentation is as exceptional as their music, including clarinet, saxophone, tuba, and two drum sets.

Last year, the group released their debut album, Burn (Naim Label, 2013), which has been received with much praise, as have their fiery live performances. In the 2013 MOBO Awards, Sons of Kemet was chosen as the best act in the jazz category.

Shabaka Hutchings - sax, clarinet
Chris Barrett - tuba
Mark Sanders - drums
Seb Rochford - drums

Karl Seglem Quartet: 15:45

Karl Seglem has always strived toward new forms of expression. During his lengthy career he has experimented with a multitude of styles from folk to electronic music, added new instruments to his repertoire, and even explored literary poetry. Every now and then the Norwegian saxophonist returns to the acoustic roots of his music – as elegantly demonstrated by his latest recording, NyeSongar.no (Ozella Music, 2013).

Seglem arrives at the Old Customs House Hall stage with his new quartet, enchanting the audience with a pure and minimal sound that reflects the light and crisp weather of the North.

Karl Seglem - sax
Andreas Ulvo - piano
Roger Arntzen - bass
Jonas H. Sjøvaag - drums

Django Bates' Belovèd: 17:30

In the 1980s, self-educated composer and pianist Django Bates was leading the way for the renaissance of European jazz. Today, he is one of the most respected and fearless artists of the ivory keys.

Together with his trio, Belovèd, the piano virtuoso pays tribute to his childhood hero, Charlie Parker, in a ‘Djangoed’ style. The latest album of the group, Confirmation (Lost Marble, 2012), includes Bates’ own compositions in addition to those of Parker.

With a constantly shifting rhythmic pulse and arresting musicality, Django Bates’ Belovèd offers an exquisite, unforgettable jazz experience.

Django Bates - piano
Petter Eldh - double bass
Peter Bruun - drums

Mathias Eick Quintet: 20:00

Trumpeter Mathias Eick incorporates the catchiness and clarity of pop melodies into his music, while nevertheless being grounded in melancholic jazz. He is one of Norway’s most talented and versatile multi-instrumentalists, masterfully playing the trumpet, vibraphone, bass, and guitar.

Eick and his magical quintet gently enchant the audience with music that reflects Nordic soundscapes, as well as the styles of Kenny Wheeler, Edvard Grieg, and Radiohead – while at the same time crafting something completely new and unique.

Mathias Eick - trumpet
Andreas Ulvo - piano
Audun Erlien - bass
Gard Nilssen - drums
Torstein Lofthus - drums

ICP Orchestra: 21:45

Nothing sounds exactly like the ICP Orchestra – not even two of their own shows sound the same!

This orchestra was founded in the 1960s and named ICP, which stands for “Instant Composers Pool,” after their signature method of creation, called “instant composition,” which blends the border between improvisation and composition. With an ensemble that reflects both jazz and chamber music instrumentation, the result of this creative experiment is sometimes described as the musical counterpart of surrealist art. The group’s Ellingtonian groove can suddenly burst into free group improvisation, filling the air one minute with sweet notes and fierce explosions the next.

The group arrives at Tampere Jazz Happening with their latest album, East of the Sun (ICP Records, 2014), and puts into play their virtuosity, humor, and unique charm.

Exclusively to this performance, the ensemble will be joined by American composer and pianist Uri Caine!

Han Bennink - drums
Ab Baars - clarinet, tenor sax
Tobias Delius - sax
Ernst Glerum - double bass
Thomas Heberer - trumpet
Tristan Honsinger - cello
Michael Moore - clarinet, sax
Mary Oliver - violin
Wolter Wierbos - trombone
Uri Caine - piano

Bill Frisell - Guitar in the Space Age: 23:30

In 1951, two American classics were born: the Fender Telecaster guitar and Bill Frisell. In his new project, “Guitar in the Space Age,” the guitarist returns to an era when the fruitful unity of these two began – 1950s and 60s guitar music, which inspired Frisell to start playing the guitar in the first place.

These days, Frisell is one of the most respected jazz guitarists, and although his career spans multiple decades, the musician has kept his artistic edge throughout the years. Frisell was chosen as the best guitarist for the fifth consecutive year in DownBeat magazine.

Saturday night at the Old Customs House Hall stage will climax with this dazzling performance as the maestro and his ensemble fill the stage with their colorful, melodic style.

Bill Frisell - guitar
Greg Leisz - mandolin, pedal steel guitar
Tony Scherr - bass
Kenny Wollesen - drums

Dub poetry is a musical genre developed from reggae that artfully combines dub and poetry. The pioneer of this style is the legendary Linton Kwesi Johnson, also known as LKJ. The “world’s first reggae poet” began his career in the 1970s by writing about his experiences living in the U.K. as a Jamaican. His career has lasted almost 40 years, but LKJ’s radical social and political message has not aged one day. This year, he received the “Order of Distinction” in recognition of his achievements within the realms of poetry and music.

At Tampere Jazz Happening, the cultural icon is accompanied by the orchestra of Dennis Bovell, also dubbed “the Quincy Jones of reggae.”

In addition DJ Dr. Riddim plays at Klubi.
