Italian jazz singer, vocal virtuoso and multiple award-winner Roberta Gambarini (born in 1972) visits Finland and features UMO Jazz Orchestra in Savoy Theatre in November.

This swinging jazz vocalist with a pure voice and silky phrasing, vocal tone and perfect intonation combined with ear for harmony makes her one of the greatest singers of all time. It has been said that Gambarini is a true successor to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae and she is praised to be no less than the best singer to emerge in the last 50 years.

Ms Gambarini has worked not only with her own trio but also Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride and Roy Hargrove, to mention a few.

Her first album, Easy to Love, was nominated for a Grammy Award, as was her third, So in Love, which was also awarded the Grand Prix du Jazz Vocal 2009 by the Jazz Academy of France. She was twice named the “Female Jazz Singer of the Year” by The Jazz Journalists Association 2007 & 2009.

Pianist Joona Toivanen and drummer combo Kallio Slaaki go on a Jazz Federation tour together this week. The tour extends to eight concert venues across the country.

Joona Toivanen, solo piano

Joona Toivanen released his first solo piano album 'Polarities' on the Swedish Footprint Records in late 2013. On the album, Toivanen explores new ground by studying the possibilities of the piano as an instrument. The release concert for Polarities took place at the Savoy Theatre in Helsinki on December 14 at the inaugural festival event We Jazz 2013. In November 2014 the solo project is heard live on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour.

On Polarities, Toivanen not only uses the traditional sonic landscape of the grand and upright piano, but also stretches the sound by the use of prepared piano and adding multiple layers into the music.

Kallio Slaaki

Mika Kallio - drums, gongs, bells, percussion
Anssi Nykänen - drums, percussion
Mikko Hassinen - drums, gongs, bells, percussion

Kallio Slaaki is an exhilarating exception in the field of jazz and rhythm music. Drummers Mika Kallio, Mikko Hassinen and Anssi Nykänen have made their mark on the Finnish jazz history with their unique instrumentation and dynamic improvisation. Their distinguished sound is Kallio's design and he also writes material for the trio. Kallio Slaaki released their debut album "Polymania For Percussion" on Fiasko Records in September 2013. The trio goes on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour in November 2014.

Jazz vocalist Aili Ikonen and the immensely successful HERD delve into the classy world of the Finnish jazzy popular song in their collaborative project Jazzbasilli ("Jazz Bug"). The programme consists of best-loved tunes from the heyday of such unforgottable jazz singers as Laila Kinnunen in updated versions. Known for her impeccable vocal performances, Aili Ikonen has appeared with such groups as UMO Jazz Orchestra, Rajaton and Don Johnson Big Band. Kvalda is one of the most long-standing of her own groups. HERD & Aili Ikonen premiered at the opening ceremony of the Helsinki Music Centre in August 2011.

HERD belongs to the creme de la creme of today's Finnish jazz groups. Their fresh sound has thus far gained them a first place in the European Jazz Competition, a slot at North Sea Jazz Festival and the house band's responsibilities at Pori Jazz 2010. They have released one album as a trio and another with Aili Ikonen. They also host their own club series.
