Mikko Innanen 10+: 14:00

Mikko Innanen is undoubtedly one of Finland’s most active and prolific musicians. The internationally renowned saxophonist received praise yet again this year when DownBeat listed him as one of the “Rising Stars” in the category of baritone saxophonists. Musically, Innanen has always rebounded from jazz to pure improvisation and back, and this exciting ensemble follows suit.

The orchestra includes twelve musicians from among the best of the Finnish jazz scene, offering an energetic dynamism that is full of surprises. The group’s style ranges from subdued moods to suddenly striking orchestral climaxes and from big band grooves to unraveled free jazz. New musical heights are guaranteed to occur at the Old Customs House Hall stage when Innanen’s complex compositions and the ensemble’s flowing improvisational skills meet.

Perch Hen Brock & Rain: 15:45

World premier!

On the Sunday afternoon of the Tampere Jazz Happening, two intriguing duos will meet, forming one delicately responsive improvisational quartet called Perch Hen Brock & Rain. The experienced Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey hail from the jazz circles of New York, and Ab Baars and Ig Henneman boast extensive careers in the Dutch scene of improvised music. Together, their musical collaboration seems to take on an almost telepathic quality and the musical possibilities seem truly limitless.

Ig Henneman - viola
Ingrid Laubrock - sax
Tom Rainey - drums

The Terence Blanchard E-Collective: 17:30

Terence Blanchard was an essential component of the jazz revival of the 1980s and is considered to be one of the most artistically mature musicians of his generation. Blanchard has won multiple Grammy awards, and is also known for his various compositions for cinema, including films by the legendary director Spike Lee. This year, Blanchard appeared on the DownBeat “best of” lists in four different categories: “jazz artist,” “trumpeter,” “composer,” and “jazz-album” (Magnetic, Blue Note Records, 2014).

Despite his solo career fame, Blanchard’s latest project is first and foremost a true collective. Young guitarist Charles Altura has quickly gained recognition by playing with legendary musicians, including Chick Corea. Washington Post described pianist Fabian Almazan as “a tremendous, storming talent.” When you add to the mix the tightly grooving rhythm section of Donald Ramsey and Oscar Seaton, the result is an unparalleled combo that heads fearlessly toward new musical discoveries.

Together, the brand new group creates a musical whirlpool, combining jazz with elements of R&B, funk, and hip hop.
